Journey with us from Ash Wednesday through Holy Week with forty days of devotions. For more than a thousand years, Christians around the world have observed this forty day period in what’s called the Lenten season. As modern-day believers, we’re not required – but invited – to do the same. It’s a time where we focus on the life found only in the cross of Christ as we consider the gravity of our sin. It’s in this reflection and remembrance we recall, or perhaps even discover for the first time, what serious business the cross really is. As Christ followers, we need to circle up at the base of the cross often.
The rhythm of remembrance and restoration is reflected in the books of Ezra and Nehemiah. In walking through these books over six weeks, we immerse ourselves in the stories of a new exodus, the power of God at work through the written Word, rebuilding despite opposition, and the significance of worship and prayer in the process.
In the book of Nehemiah, the rebuilding of the walls, the stabilizing of Jerusalem, and the Jewish community that developed – all played key roles leading to the life and ministry of Jesus recorded in the Gospels. The rebuilt temple would serve as a place of worship for the Lord’s people for centuries until Christ removed the need for a physical people. It’s written to remind the people of Israel of God’s redemptive plan; to encourage them to remain separate and pure in matters of doctrine and ethics.
During this seven week plan we’ll move toward the cross on Calvary with Ezra and Nehemiah as our guide, and along the way we’ll repent over our sin and rejoice in the resurrection of our risen Savior who offers forgiveness and freedom, redemption and rebuilding.
“Why are you looking for the living among the dead? Asked the men. He is not here, but he has risen! Remember how he spoke to you when he was still in Galilee.” Luke 24:5-6
