Psalm 37 | He’s Got It

Psalm 37 has always been an anchor for my soul.

In this passage, we see David speak about the things we consider and ponder in our hearts and infrequently verbalize. It’s almost a challenge for our minds. It really is a sweet yet significant glimpse into the intimacy of God and His righteousness. He reminds us that we are to keep our eyes solely focused on Him rather than comparing ourselves to the world and their expectations.

As I read this passage, the first 7 verses really hit home with 5 life-changing directives that at a quick read could be overlooked. But at a closer look, David instructs us with simple directives that show us the way to truly live. Let’s take a look at them:

  • Do not fret – or worry (v.1)
  • Trust – in the Lord and do good (v.3)
  • Take Delight – He will give you the desires (v.4)
  • Commit – your way to the Lord, trust Him to do it (v.5)
  • Be Still – and wait patiently for Him (v.7)

At a quick glance, I’d say He’s saying to us as His daughters, to simply slow down and reset our focus. Focus on Him and His ways, He’s got it. If I were to summarize these first seven verses in a way that might be a sweet conversation with the Lord, He would say to us:

“Daughter, why are you so worried and worked up? Don’t you trust me? Trust me I’ve got this. You simply need to focus on doing what is right. I see your desires and longings, they’re not overlooked. I’ve heard your quiet whispers no one else knows about. Just press into knowing me more and leave the outcomes of those longings to Me. I have a way of working those out in a way you can’t imagine. Just trust Me, stay focused on Me, and commit everything you do to Me. I’ll take care of the rest. But most importantly, slow down and rest and wait on Me. It’s not about your doing or you making it happen. In the stillness, I will show you what your part is. But you must wait patiently for my timing and instruction, so slow down listen for My voice and be patient.”

Time and time again, I hear His voice whisper these reminders to me. This passage, has not only been an anchor to my soul, but a promise that the Lord has been faithful to fulfill over and over again. As you consider these directives in this season of life, I hope this passage anchors your soul and keeps the tossing seas of this world from taking your eyes off Jesus.
