The Savor the Wonder Advent Devotional series features excerpts from Savor the Wonder: Behold Jesus and two weekly guest writers. We invite you to rediscover the wonder and amazement of the Christmas season. The Babe who was sent for us by God is worthy of celebrating every day.
Let’s begin with the announcement that would change not only history but eternity. In Luke 1:26-28 we read that God sent an angel to Mary to tell her she had been chosen to carry His son. Pause. Think about the whole scene. Can you even begin to imagine that experience? The sudden angel appearing, the sudden announcement. In an instant, her whole world changed.
There is a popular song called Mary Did You Know. Truth is Mary did not know all that was ahead or how it would come to pass. Her human understanding couldn’t fathom, yet her surrender and submission were part of God’s plan to bring about our salvation.
She was highly favored yet chosen. She was young, poor, and female - all characteristics that to people of her day would make her seem unusable by God for any task, let alone to carry His son, Jesus, the promised Messiah.
Have you ever experienced a sudden change? The Christmas Story proclaims a message of hope, assuring us that God fulfills His promises and shows us through the lives of Mary, Elizabeth, and the Shepherds that He works through ordinary people to do extraordinary things.
Perhaps you’ve experienced a “suddenly” this past year - whether it brought challenge or victory, you rest assured that we can live knowing that nothing is impossible with God.
